When I lived in Fargo, I was unusual -- I was a middle-class,
home-owning adult who chose not to own a car. For six years I
used public transportation, bicycled or walked virtually everywhere.
When I moved to Jersey, I sold the house and bought a little pickup,
crawling rather literally back into the saddle. I wasn't
sure I was going to like what I found when I got here. (Unlike
most Americans, I don't think I'm a particularly good driver --
adequate, but no Andretti.) I was pleasantly surprised.
